Temperance Hall - Derby Road

Obviously not a pub but included here because it was built as a direct result of the influence of the brewing industry. The Hall was opened in 1884, as part of the Temperance Movement then sweeping England. It served as a meeting place for people away from the temptation of alcohol supplied by the many public houses in the village. In those days, pubs opened for whatever hours the licensee wanted to, a situation not changed until the licensing hours restrictions brought in during World War I and still remaining virtually unchanged today.

The Hall held 500-600 people, teetotal dances and meetings were held and during the 1914-1918 War, it was the first place in the village to be used as a cinema.
